Really, the new Miss America?

Ok, let me start by saying that Miss Indiana rocked it in the Miss America pageant this year. But, she didn't win - she lost to Miss Michigan (see photo)

Now, Miss America has always been very traditional - big hair, lots of makeup, etc, but this year, because no network wanted to carry the pageant and Miss America is continuously overshadowed by Donald Trump and his trampy trio of Barbie dolls in the Miss USA circuit, the pageant was insistent on changing the image of Miss America. No longer was she to be a fem-bot, she was the new It-Girl!

After a four-week run on TLC of the show that showed the makeovers of all the girls from stiff pageant queens to girls that you just want to hang out with, I was looking forward to a new and cool Miss America. That pageant itself was pretty new - girls in jeans (no more state costumes, although those were pretty funny - how do you dress up like Delaware??), losers sitting on the stage eating carbs, etc. What would this new It-girl look like?

Well, apparently, the same as every other Miss America. Big hair, weird dress, and belting out "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as a talent. That's Miss Michigan, the winner. Really? That's the coolest and hippest girl you could find? Miss Washington was pretty awesome and laid back, Miss Indiana danced around and sang a cool song in Spanish. But, the new Miss America wears this dress and sings a song about inspiration and finding your dreams that made me change the channel in about 3 seconds.

So, I guess some things are as American as apple pie and can't be changed, but kudos for those that tried! Guess Miss America is here to stay!
