The Summer Search

Now that first semester and finals are over (I don't have my grades yet, so don't ask) my focus returns to not only second semester, but securing an internship for that all-important 1L Summer. Now, I consider myself at an advantage from others because I know exactly what type of law that I want to study. However, I still want a great internship. I thought I'd just put out there what my progress is on securing on - and if you know someone in the Boston area who wants a legal intern, let me know!

Massachusetts Attorney General's Office: I secured an internship with this agency through an online submission of my resume and cover letter. The interview is on the 17th, and I have no idea how many people they are taking and how many people are interviewing.

Air Force JAG: This, of course, is my ultimate job, and the JAG Corps doesn't give internships to first year students. This didn't stop me from tracking down the JAG guy at the local base though and volunteering to come in anyway to do whatever work that interns do. The captain that I talked to is checking with the head JAG guy on this. Not my top option, but an avenue.

Judicial Internship: Working for a judge would be pretty sweet, and I sent out letters to all the District Court judges for Somerville and Cambridge asking if there was any internship in their chambers available. Unlikely, but there's always a chance one of them was in the military and I can play the Army card.

Boston District Attorney's Office: This would be really great, and a friend from the theater got me a connection. The Office called me last fall and asked me to call them in January. I did, and they had no idea who I was, so I had to resubmit my resume to go in the pile of the "hundreds" they assure me that they get. Another long shot, but they have to have someone, so why not me?

Greater Boston Legal Services: This agency does free/cheap legal services for underprivileged folks in the Boston and Cambridge area. I went to an open house last fall for them and it sounded pretty interesting, plus, I get to help the greater good, which I am all about. I am hoping to submit my info to them in the next couple of days.

Places that I have submitted to, but haven't heard back from and don't have an interesting anecdote to share: Children's Legal Services, US Attorney (Criminal Division), AIDS Action Committee

Places I did NOT get interviews to: Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, US Attorney (Civil Division)

Will keep you posted!
