Stupid Icelandic kroner...or something like that. There are a couple of free papers handed out to all of us lovely commuters everyday, those being the Metro (think boring, regular paper) and the BostonNow (think the Metro, but funner) and today's Metro announced (happily, I'm sure) that the BostonNow is out of business, effective immediately.
I'm pretty bummed about this for several reasons. First, I wrote a faily popular blog for the BostonNow last summer about all the weirdness I spotted on the Red Line. This was the first paper to ever type anything that I have written, and even the editor dug my stuff. I even got angry mail - that means success! So, I'm kinda sad to see the BN go because of that. Second, it's just better than the Metro. The stories are better, the layout is sharper, and the participation availability to anyone who wants to sign up for a blog makes it a community project almost. Third, I dug the folks that handed it out. Who can forget the awesome lady at Downtown Crossing, the first paperlady to make the BostonNow's "Best Paper Distributor" list, who regularly shamed the person handing out the Metro until they moved down the street. I hope she can find another job. I kinda worry about her. Finally, BostonNow's always fun treasure hunt will be no more, and even though I never found it, despite walking around MIT/Fenway Park at night with members of my study group, failing to accurately translate any clues, it was something I looked forward to failing at every week.
So, peace be with you BostonNow, you and your Icelandic backers who are forced to close due to the failing kroner/dollar ratio or whatever your issues are. I'll miss you!
