Online Bits of Happiness

So, I managed to get this job in the city, working on the 15th floor, overlooking beautiful Boston, making $20 an hour, doing exactly what I did in the Army. Only with better clothes.

That's the good part.

The bad part is that it's for a big financial-esque company that I don't care about. Seriously, don't care what they do (don't really KNOW what they do) and that's tough for me. Even though I was ready to move on from the Army at this stage, I really miss feeling like I'm doing something for the greater good. Call me cheesy, but at the end of the day for the past 4 1/2 years I felt like I was helping out the society, one piece of paperwork at a time.

But, for the next few months, I am committed to the corporate hum-drum. Riding the T with other people in business pants and running shoes and blank stares. Passing the folks who rattle change in styrofoam Dunkin' Donuts cups. Grabbing a post-work drink at Good Life. Making small talk about the weather with accountants in the break room.

In an effort to add joy to this life, I try to do daily things that make my experience a little better. A-like so:

  1. First off, when I get into the office, I immediately go check out fbofw.com, my favorite comic.

  2. Then, I enter a daily giveaway contest at Glamour magazine's website. I've never won, but I enter. Every day. It's always something different. Today it's Dior lipgloss. Yesterday it was a spa vacation.

  3. When 2pm rolls around, I get an excerpt from Pride and Prejudice in my email inbox from dailylit.com. They have hundreds of books listed, and they will send you a small piece of one each day when you sign up. For free.

  4. I play a couple of games on Solitaire on The Office section of NBC.com. The cards look like the characters - hooray! Anyway, I go for time, and the fastest that I've managed to win the game is 2:16, which is down from my original win at 3:08. Let me know if you beat me.

  5. I always check out perezhilton.com and thesuperficial.com to catch up on celebrity sleaze

And, when I'm not doing all of that, I'm working at my job to support my boss, who is a bigwig in this company.

In conclusion, I miss having a purpose that I enjoy, and I'm really glad that I'm not looking down the road at 20 years of this. No amount of Online Happiness could get me through it!!
