Pregnant!

Whew! Feels good to make it more official. We haven't been keeping our pregnancy a secret...but we haven't been Facebook blasting it (before yesterday) either. I mean, let's face it, other than a lack of a period, fatigue, and nausea, I had nothing to show for this baby, so I wanted to wait to get an ultrasound picture. Here's how pregnancy is going so far, and then I'll probably do a weekly update as not to bombard people with baby news.

We were pretty sure after our Iceland trip that I was pregnant. I was feeling a bit nauseous and my boobs were awesomely huge (so far the only plus of pregnancy). After waiting until I missed my period (because home tests are effing expensive!) we did the home test, which came back positive. When walking out of the bathroom with the positive test, I said "Hey, Dad, got your camera?" to Jon, who thinks this is the dumbest thing I could have possibly said and brings it up often.

A quick trip to the doctor let us know that the money spent on the pregnancy test wasn't in vain, and I was indeed pregnant. This was about at about 5 weeks. Being a military spouse, I had to go to some nurse on base, get a briefing (typical) and get referred to an outside civilian obstetrician. Went there, got lots of tests, and everything was going well. Until...they called me and told me that I was a carrier for cystic fibrosis. Not a big deal (although weird, since it's nowhere in my family) unless Jon is a carrier, then the baby has a 25% chance of having cystic fibrosis. Yikes. My first scare over a baby I would occasionally forget even existed! Jon got tested the next day, and we just (on the day of the ultrasound) got word that he is NOT a carrier, so all is well - hooray!

How is pregnancy so far? It's hard to say. I'm nauseous...a lot. It's only led to a couple bouts of vomiting, usually before I eat anything in the morning, so I don't mind too much. I hate throwing up food, though. I find that if I graze throughout the day, I'm usually ok at keeping the nausea down to a minimum. The fatigue is pretty bad, though. I am a big sleeper, but I don't take naps often, until now. I nap about every day, then can't get to sleep at night. Also, I'm going to the bathroom a lot and I've gained a bit of weight. Basically, I just feel like I have the flu and I'm fat. That's good, right?

We do plan on finding out the sex of the baby. We refer to it as a boy, so we are kinda thinking it might be, and we only have boy names picked out. Truth be told, I was just relieved that the ultrasound only revealed ONE baby :-) I will be in my 2nd trimester during the bar exam, which is supposed to be a good trimester, so I'm hoping I'll have lots of energy.

I've been...ok at staying away from foods and drinks I'm not supposed to have. I'm not drinking, obviously, but caffeine has been tough for me. I drink a tiny can of Coke Zero daily, usually. Also, I had a tuna fish sandwich for lunch because I was craving one. And I took Excedrin Migraine one day for a headache. But, I take my prenatal vitamins and generally try to avoid things that will hurt the baby. But, I don't want to coddle him already. Ha ha ha.

Jon is excited, although it didn't seem real to him until the ultrasound. We've been reading The Dude's Guide to Pregnancy out loud at night, which is hysterical, and unfortunately accurate. He's being gracious about taking over trash detail for me, because garbage triggers vomiting and litter box duty. The other day he said "how often do you think about being pregnant?" and I said "Um...ALL THE TIME" to which he replied "I don't think about it that much." Ha..of course not...the alien isn't in your uterus.

The ultrasound was yesterday which made it all very real. First, Jon had to watch me get an internal ultrasound, which was the full feet-in-stirrups treatment that guys are rarely privy to. Second, seeing the baby was just amazing. It's little heart fluttering, etc. And then he started kicking and dancing and it was hysterical.

So, that's what's going on thus far in the land of the child-bearing. I'm showing a little bit, but only when I'm in the shower and stuff, so if you pass me on the street, I probably still look like the amazingly hot and thin woman you all know and love. But feel free to shower me with baby gifts anyway :-)

Yay! I'm so glad Jon's test turned out negative. The baby appears to be in need of a sweater, I'll get on it right away.
