So, another audition last weekend, this time for Bye Bye Birdie, a show that I don't really know, but it was worth a shot. I emailed the group that was holding auditions because they didn't have a webpage. The director told me that it was a relatively new, small, family-oriented group, so I thought "Ok, small production, but we'll see what happens." So, I get dressed, warm up my voice, do some rehearsing, drive (in the rain) to the audition, check in, meet the director, and happily sit down to fill out my paperwork, and there it is: Each participant is responsible for bringing $400 into the show, through one of three options. First, give them $400. Um. No. Second, give them $75 and then get $325 worth of ads for their program. Ok, the $75 is a maybe, but who has time to chase down ads? That option's out. Third, give them $125 and then show up to a bunch of events.
Sigh. It was ridiculous, but there I was, awkwardly looking at this information, knowing that I couldn't do these options. Do I audition anyway? Do I walk out? AFter a couple of minutes, I went back up and explained to him that it was too pricy for me. I thanked him, because I didn't want to insult his way or running things, even though it was insane. He kept saying "Wait, wait, there are options. Are you sure?" Um, unless there's a "don't pay $400 option....I'm sure."
