Internship Search

Wow does law school go fast! It seems like just yesterday that I was looking for an internship for last summer and, before I knew it, it was time to look for one for next summer! Luckily I managed to nail one down quickly and I don't have to worry about it anymore.

I accepted an internship (paid!) through my school where I get to intern with a judge somewhere in Boston. The school places students at all levels of courts, but my first choice was the lower levels of state trial courts. I loved all the prestige that went along with working in the federal courts last summer, but since I've had that experience, I was looking for something different, and the fast pace and full docket of the state courts. To get this internship, I had to interview with a couple of professors that turned out to be an interesting experience. The day of my internship, I started getting a migraine. I went to my first class, but I skipped my second to nurse my headache, this being the first and only time I have skipped that class (Family Law). An hour or so before my interview, I ran into a friend who was also interviewing and I asked who the professors were that were conductin the interviews, and, sure enough, it's my Family Law professor whose class I skipped. Yikes. I went to the interview, and the two professors were like good cop/bad cop. My family law prof is very warm and you feel like every answer you give is great. The other prof (I didn't know him prior) was very stern and made me feel like a moron. Especially when the first question was "Why didn't you try out for law review?" But I was ready for that question :-) Anyway, I guess they liked me, because I was offered the position!

I also was accepted to do an Air Force JAG internship next summer, also paid, but they could not offer me anything at the base here in Boston, and doing another summer apart from Jon really wasn't desirable for me. So, I turned that one down, though they were very nice and understanding. Even if it HAD been in Boston, I would have turned it down because the chance to interview with a judge is pretty great, and a unique opportunity that I might not get again.

So, my next step is to be placed with a specific judge and to work out my summer schedule. It's just nice to have the search over!!!
